January 2025 marks an exciting milestone for cultural heritage and sustainability in Europe.<\/strong>
We are thrilled to announce the official launch of SIMIACCI \u2013 Sustainable Intelligent Management of Indoor Air Quality for the Culture and Creative Industries<\/strong>, a four-year Horizon Europe project dedicated to transforming how Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAMs) manage indoor air quality.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Why SIMIACCI?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Preserving cultural heritage requires precise control of indoor environments. GLAMs consume significant energy to regulate pollutants such as VOCs, NOx, H\u2082S<\/strong>, and humidity levels. Traditional solutions often lack efficiency and sustainability. SIMIACCI addresses this challenge head-on by introducing innovative, climate-friendly technologies<\/strong> that protect artifacts while reducing energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kick-off in Lisbon<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The project officially started on January 1, 2025<\/strong>, and celebrated its kick-off at the National Coach Museum in Lisbon<\/strong> on January 23\u201324<\/strong>. Hosted by IST ID<\/strong>, the project coordinator, this two-day event gathered 15 partners from across Europe<\/strong> to align on goals, share insights, and plan the roadmap for the next four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Vision<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

SIMIACCI aims to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Develop advanced materials<\/strong> (Metal Organic Frameworks) to capture harmful pollutants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Create predictive models and sensors<\/strong> for real-time contaminant monitoring and conservation recommendations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Design modular systems<\/strong> that balance technical performance and environmental impact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Introduce new business models<\/strong> combining technology and sustainability, backed by economic and social analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Impact Across Europe<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Over the project\u2019s lifetime, 20 prototypes<\/strong> will be deployed in 7 GLAMs<\/strong> across Europe, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Museum National d\u2019Histoire Naturelle (France)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Museus e Monumentos de Portugal EPE (Portugal)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden K\u00fcnste Stuttgart (Germany)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Deutsches Museum von Meisterwerken der Naturwissenschaft und Technik (Germany)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      These demonstrations aim to reduce energy demand by 30\u201350%<\/strong> and extend artifact conservation time<\/strong>, setting new standards for sustainable practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Engaging Communities<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

      Through dedicated exhibitions reaching 30,000 visitors<\/strong>, SIMIACCI will inspire climate action across GLAMs and beyond. The creation of the SIMIACCI label<\/strong> will further consolidate leadership in sustainability within the cultural sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
