About SIMIACCI
Context
The EU’s climate transition demands sustainable practices across all sectors, including Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs). CCIs rely on high-energy systems to regulate VOCs, NOx, H2S, and humidity, crucial for preserving cultural heritage artifacts. These pollutants must be maintained at extremely low levels, far below typical building standards. Traditional indoor air quality solutions often lack efficiency and sustainability. There is an urgent need for environmentally, socially, and economically viable solutions that also meet curators’ and conservators’ requirements.

Objectives
- Deploy innovative, efficient, reusable, and stable MOFs material to control air quality levels in the presence of different families of pollutants, compatible with a variety of the most GLAM-representative artefacts.
- Support end-users’ acceptance of the developed solution by easing its maintenance through AI-based predictive models and capacity building material.
- Ensure climate transition of GLAMs through the development of tailored business model ensuring wide uptake of SIMIACCI system.
- Impulse climate transition of different sectors with high IAQ standards through the creation of a new industrial value chain and the supporting environment.

Concept
SIMIACCI will introduce innovative technologies to transform indoor air quality management, focusing on:
- Advanced Materials: Utilizing Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to capture harmful pollutants like VOCs, NOx, and H2S through highly porous nanoscale structures.
- Predictive Models & Sensors: Developing tools to monitor and forecast contaminant levels, optimizing air quality while minimizing energy and material use.
- Modular Air Control Systems: Designing adaptable solutions that balance technical efficiency with environmental sustainability.
- Sustainable Business Models: Integrating these innovations with market strategies backed by economic, environmental, and social analysis.

Impact
SIMIACCI will develop 20 prototypes to be showcased in 6 GLAMs of different sizes and contexts in 5 different countries across Europe. These demonstrations will provide concrete evidence of energy and resource-efficient solutions, reducing energy demand by 30-50% and extending the conservation time of cultural heritage artefacts. Additionally, through dedicated exhibitions reaching 30,000 visitors, SIMIACCI is expected to inspire climate transition across GLAMs and beyond, ultimately influencing 5 additional sectors: hotels and resorts, educational buildings, shopping malls, healthcare facilities and transport hubs. The creation of the SIMIACCI label will further consolidate GLAMs’ leadership in sustainable practices.
